Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Chhatra Janhit Party (CJP), launched a scathing attack on Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the ongoing NEET controversy, stating that Pradhan “has the blood of 17 students on his hands.” The accusation comes amid widespread protests and allegations of irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 examination, which have led to student unrest and, according to Dipke, multiple suicides.
Dipke's Remarks at a Press Conference
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi on Thursday, Dipke alleged that the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the NEET exam, had failed to ensure a fair process. He claimed that 17 students had died by suicide due to the stress and uncertainty caused by the exam irregularities. “Dharmendra Pradhan ji, you are directly responsible for this mess. The blood of these 17 students is on your hands,” Dipke said, as quoted by news agencies.
Background of the NEET Controversy
The NEET-UG 2024 examination, held on May 5, faced numerous complaints of paper leaks, malpractices, and discrepancies in results. The NTA initially awarded grace marks to over 1,500 candidates to compensate for time loss, but later withdrew them after a Supreme Court intervention. The controversy intensified after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe into the alleged irregularities. Student groups have been protesting across the country, demanding a re-examination and accountability from the education ministry.
Dipke, known for his student activism, accused Pradhan of ignoring the plight of aspirants. “Instead of addressing the issues, the minister is busy defending the NTA. This shows a complete lack of empathy,” he added.
Political Reactions
The CJP founder’s remarks have drawn sharp reactions from political circles. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dismissed Dipke’s allegations as baseless and politically motivated. “Such statements are irresponsible and aimed at creating panic among students. The government has taken all necessary steps to ensure transparency,” said a BJP spokesperson.
Opposition parties, however, have backed Dipke’s concerns. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly demanded Pradhan’s resignation, citing the NEET fiasco as a sign of systemic failure. The Supreme Court is currently hearing petitions related to the exam, with the next hearing scheduled for July 8.
Impact on Students
The NEET controversy has left thousands of medical aspirants in limbo. Many students have reported psychological distress, with helplines receiving an increased number of calls from anxious candidates. “We don’t know if our results are valid. This uncertainty is unbearable,” said a student from Bihar who wished to remain anonymous.
Dipke’s statement has reignited the debate on student suicides linked to competitive exams in India. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), over 10,000 students died by suicide in 2022, with exam-related stress being a major factor.
Government's Response
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has defended the government’s handling of the situation, stating that the NTA has been asked to review the process. “We are committed to the welfare of students. Any lapse will be addressed strictly,” Pradhan said in a recent interview. He also called for patience until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict.
Meanwhile, the NTA has announced that a re-test for affected candidates will be conducted if directed by the court. The agency has also formed a committee to suggest reforms in the examination system.
Conclusion
The NEET row continues to escalate, with student activists like Abhijeet Dipke holding the education minister directly accountable. As the Supreme Court deliberates, the pressure mounts on the government to restore faith in the examination process.
