Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Advocates for Rational Education to Combat Superstition
In a significant address at Kukkundur, Udupi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed concern over the persistence of superstition even among educated individuals, underscoring the critical role of education in fostering rational thinking and a scientific outlook. He spoke during the inauguration of the Kisan Sabha auditorium and the 35th annual day celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi Residential High School, organized by the Kisan Sabha Trust on Wednesday.
Education Must Build Social Responsibility
Siddaramaiah asserted that education devoid of rationality and scientific temper fails to contribute to a socially responsible society. "If education does not help us respond to social issues, it loses its purpose," he stated. He highlighted various government schemes, including the guarantee initiatives, designed to ensure equal opportunities for all citizens, irrespective of caste or religion.
Progress on Government Promises and Guarantee Schemes
The Chief Minister provided detailed updates on the fulfillment of government commitments:
- During his previous tenure from 2013 to 2018, 158 out of 165 promises were fulfilled.
- Of the 590 assurances made during the 2023 assembly elections, 243 have already been implemented.
- The government allocates Rs 52,000 crore annually for the five guarantee schemes, with a cumulative expenditure of Rs 1.2 lakh crore to date.
- Funds are also being directed towards broader development projects alongside these guarantees.
Honesty in Politics and Social Equality
Siddaramaiah lamented the rarity of honesty in contemporary politics and linked caste and social inequality to historical deprivations in literacy and cultural advancement. Quoting B.R. Ambedkar, he emphasized that political freedom is meaningless without social and economic freedom, reinforcing the need for inclusive policies.
