Congress Defends Youth Wing's Shirtless Protest at Global AI Summit

In a significant political development, the Congress party has officially defended the actions of its youth wing, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), after members staged a shirtless protest at the venue of the global AI summit in New Delhi on Friday. The demonstration sparked widespread criticism online, prompting a robust response from senior party leaders.

Official Stand: A Peaceful Expression of Youth Anger

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, in a video message posted on social media platform X around 6:40 pm, articulated the party's position, describing the protest as "peaceful" and a reflection of the deep-seated anger among the country's youth. This statement came hours after the protest and amid a day-long backlash targeting IYC chief Uday Bhanu Chib.

"Since the protest, it has been claimed that it was wrong to do this protest at the venue of the summit and that it has tarnished the image of the country," Khera stated, directly addressing the criticism. He emphasized that the protest was a legitimate exercise of democratic rights.

Defending the Protest Location and Method

Khera challenged critics who questioned the choice of the India AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam as the protest site. "Where should a protest be held? Protest is held where it is visible to people and where media is present," he argued, highlighting the strategic importance of high-visibility locations for political demonstrations.

He further lamented the perceived double standards in political discourse, asking, "If we speak in Parliament, then leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi becomes the biggest threat for the nation; if we come out on the streets, we are called 'rashtra virodhi' (anti-national). Where do we speak?" Khera asserted that the protest successfully brought attention to critical issues requiring national focus.

IYC's Justification: Safeguarding National Interests

Earlier, the IYC had issued a press statement and its national president, Uday Bhanu Chib, actively defended the protest through a series of videos, photos, and posts on social media. Chib stated, "Protesting and raising our voice against decisions taken against the national interest is our constitutional right," reinforcing the legal basis for their actions.

The IYC clarified that their demonstration was aimed at safeguarding national interests and not an opposition to the summit itself. "We are not against the summit. We are against any compromise with India's interests. We will never allow the interests of the country's youths and farmers to be compromised," the statement read, underscoring their commitment to protecting vulnerable sections of society.

Political Endorsement and Broader Implications

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh reposted Khera's video statement, signaling party-wide support for the youth wing's actions. This endorsement highlights the Congress's strategy to leverage youth discontent as a political tool, particularly in the context of technological and economic policies discussed at high-profile summits.

The incident raises important questions about:

  • The boundaries of protest in democratic spaces
  • The role of youth in political activism
  • The intersection of technology policy and national interest

As debates continue, the Congress party's defense of the shirtless protest underscores a broader narrative of resistance and advocacy for youth and farmer rights, setting the stage for further political engagements on these fronts.
