Maharashtra Congress Chief Sparks Row by Equating Shivaji Maharaj with Tipu Sultan
Congress Leader's Tipu Sultan-Shivaji Comparison Triggers BJP Complaint

Maharashtra Congress Chief's Controversial Remarks on Shivaji Maharaj and Tipu Sultan

Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal ignited a significant political controversy on Saturday by drawing a parallel between the revered Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the 18th-century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan. The remarks came during a discussion about a portrait of Tipu Sultan displayed in the office of Malegaon Municipal Corporation Deputy Mayor Shan-e-Hind Nihal Ahmed, which had faced opposition from Shiv Sena and other groups.

Sapkal's Defense of Tipu Sultan as a Follower of Shivaji's Ideals

Speaking to reporters in Marathi, Sapkal asserted that Tipu Sultan had followed in the tradition of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's ideals. "The kind of bravery that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj possessed and the concept of 'Swarajya' (self-rule) that he introduced... much later, following in that very tradition and taking inspiration from his ideals, Tipu Sultan waged war against the British," Sapkal stated.

He further elaborated, "In that sense, Tipu Sultan was a great warrior who displayed immense bravery and was a true son of India. He never allowed any poisonous or communal ideas to sway him. As a symbol of bravery, we should view Tipu Sultan as equivalent to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj."

BJP Lodges Police Complaint Against Congress Leader

The Bharatiya Janata Party swiftly responded by filing a formal complaint against Sapkal in Pune. Following this, police registered a case against the Congress leader under sections 192, 196(1), 196(2), 352, and 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The BJP's complaint alleges that Sapkal's comments hurt the sentiments of Hindus and followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, with potential to disturb communal harmony in the region. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis entered the fray, condemning the comparison as "condemnable" and asserting that the Congress leader should feel ashamed of himself for making such remarks.

Congress Counters with Accusations of BJP Hypocrisy

Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant launched a counterattack, accusing the BJP of "double standards" and pursuing a polarization agenda in response to the criticism Sapkal faced for 'equating' the two historical figures.

In an official statement, Sawant cited multiple instances to support his claim that BJP leaders had previously supported or endorsed references to Tipu Sultan in public spaces and official forums. He specifically mentioned resolutions in civic bodies in Akola and Mumbai, along with past occasions where BJP leaders had allegedly praised or associated with the Mysore ruler.

"The BJP earlier admired Tipu Sultan, but now calls him bad for its polarization agenda. What should this hypocrisy be called? Tipu Sultan used to wear a ring bearing the name of Lord Ram," Sawant claimed, presenting this as evidence of the historical figure's inclusive nature.

Political Fallout and Accusations of Polarization Tactics

The Congress leader further accused the ruling party of engaging in "distorted religious politics" and attempting to polarize voters ahead of upcoming elections. Sawant reiterated his party's criticism of the BJP's stance on the issue, suggesting that the opposition to Sapkal's remarks was politically motivated rather than based on genuine concern for historical accuracy or public sentiment.

This controversy highlights the ongoing political tensions in Maharashtra surrounding historical narratives and their contemporary interpretations. The comparison between two iconic figures from different regions and religious backgrounds has touched upon sensitive issues of identity, historical legacy, and communal harmony in the state.
