The Congress party in Punjab has escalated its confrontation with the state government by demanding disciplinary action against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for his alleged unruly behavior in the legislative assembly. The opposition party accused the Chief Minister of repeatedly disrupting house proceedings and using unparliamentary language, which they claim undermines democratic decorum.
Congress Alleges Repeated Misconduct
Senior Congress leaders submitted a formal complaint to the Speaker, urging strict action under assembly rules. They cited multiple instances where Mann reportedly interrupted debates, made personal remarks against opposition members, and ignored the chair's directives. The party argued that such conduct sets a dangerous precedent for legislative discipline.
Government Dismisses Allegations
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) dismissed the Congress's demand as politically motivated. A government spokesperson stated that the Chief Minister's conduct was within parliamentary norms and that the opposition was merely trying to divert attention from its own failures. The Speaker has not yet announced any decision on the complaint.
This development comes amid heightened political tensions in Punjab, where the Congress and AAP have been locked in a bitter rivalry. The Congress has also threatened to stage protests if no action is taken, signaling a prolonged standoff in the assembly.
