Congress slams non-transparency in Great Nicobar project

The Congress party has accused the government of maintaining an 'extra-ordinary level of non-transparency' regarding the Great Nicobar Island project. The Rs 92,000 crore project received environmental clearance on November 11, 2022, with a condition that conservation and mitigation plans were to be submitted within 15 days.

Congress Raises Concerns

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh questioned the lack of public disclosure about the project's progress. He highlighted that despite the clearance conditions, there has been no update on the submission of conservation plans. Ramesh also sought details on the status of the project and the steps taken to protect the island's biodiversity.

Government's Response

Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav defended the project, stating that all necessary clearances were obtained and that the government is committed to sustainable development. However, the Congress party remains skeptical, demanding full transparency and access to project documents.
