Congress Leaders Submit Memorandum Warning of India-US Trade Deal Impact on Farmers
Former education minister and Jalandhar Cantt MLA Pargat Singh led a significant delegation of Congress leaders on Monday to submit a formal memorandum addressed to the governor through Jalandhar deputy commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal. The delegation expressed grave concerns about the potential consequences of the proposed India-US trade agreement on the agricultural sector.
Zero Duty Imports Could Devastate Small-Scale Farmers
In the detailed memorandum, Pargat Singh issued a stark warning that the proposed trade agreement would prove particularly harmful to India's farming community. He emphasized that allowing foreign agricultural equipment and crops to enter the country at 0% duty would create an uneven playing field, making it extremely difficult for small and medium-scale farmers in Punjab and other agricultural regions across India to compete effectively.
"This decision will ruin the nation's farmers, the majority of whom are small-scale cultivators lacking the financial resources and technological infrastructure to compete with well-funded global agricultural corporations," stated Pargat Singh during the submission. He highlighted that these farmers already operate on thin margins and cannot withstand the pressure from heavily subsidized international agricultural products.
Demand for Immediate Withdrawal of Trade Provisions
The Congress leader demanded that the government immediately withdraw the proposed trade provisions affecting agriculture. He pointed out that farmers were already struggling significantly in the aftermath of the earlier controversial farm laws and the devastating effects of recent floods that have impacted crop yields and agricultural infrastructure across multiple states.
Pargat Singh argued that introducing additional competitive pressure through duty-free agricultural imports would push many farming families into deeper financial distress, potentially leading to increased rural indebtedness and migration from agricultural occupations.
Criticism of Punjab Government Actions
In addition to addressing trade concerns, Pargat Singh also criticized recent actions at the residence of MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, describing them as politically motivated maneuvers. He alleged that the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government had crossed established democratic norms and boundaries in its approach to political opposition.
"The public will respond appropriately to these oppressive tactics that undermine democratic principles and target political opponents through questionable means," warned Pargat Singh, suggesting that such actions would not go unanswered by the electorate.
