New Delhi witnessed a spike in maximum temperature on Sunday, with the mercury touching 37.9 degrees Celsius at the base station Safdarjung. This was a notch below the normal mark, compared to 36.9 degrees Celsius recorded a day earlier. The minimum temperature settled at 26.2 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal, against 23.8 degrees Celsius on the previous day.
IMD Forecast for Monday and Tuesday
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects the temperature to hover between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius on Monday, before settling to 35-37 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. A yellow alert has been issued for the next two days, indicating the possibility of light rain and gusty winds.
Weather Systems and Temperature Trends
According to IMD, a north-south trough extending from north Pakistan and adjoining Punjab to Marathwada, along with an upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Rajasthan and neighbouring regions including Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra at 0.9 km above mean sea level, persists. The department predicts a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius during the next two days, followed by a fall of 2-3 degrees over the subsequent two days, and another rise of 3-5 degrees thereafter. Minimum temperatures are expected to rise gradually by 2-3 degrees over the next three days, with no large change afterwards.
Air Quality Update
The air quality in Delhi was recorded as moderate, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 127, compared to 116 a day earlier. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather and air quality reports.
