In a bid to improve safety for women commuters during early hours, the Delhi government is planning to introduce Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus services starting from 4 am. Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu shared the proposal, stating several measures are being considered to enhance safety across the city.
Details of the Early Morning Bus Service
According to LG Sandhu, the early-morning bus services for women commuters will begin at 4 am, with buses operating at one-hour intervals. Initially, these buses will be driven by women drivers and may also have women police personnel and marshals on board. This initiative aims to provide a safer travel option for women who need to commute during early hours for work or other purposes.
Existing Free Travel Scheme for Women
The Delhi government already offers free travel to women and transgender residents on DTC and cluster buses through the Pink Saheli Smart Card, which replaced the earlier paper-based ticket system. This card allows eligible commuters to travel without paying fares, promoting greater mobility and financial independence.
Strengthening LG Listening Posts Initiative
Sandhu also stressed the need to strengthen the LG Listening Posts initiative. He emphasized the importance of improving monitoring and operations of existing portals. “When we have portals in place, efforts should be made to improve monitoring and operations. I have asked the commissioner to encourage people to upload photographs of unauthorised construction so that genuine cases can be prioritised,” he said.
Accountability for Building Collapses and Fire Incidents
Referring to recent building collapses and fire incidents, the LG underlined the need for accountability. “Responsibility must be fixed. Authorities cannot evade accountability by claiming that an issue falls outside their jurisdiction,” he said. This statement underscores the government's commitment to ensuring safety in urban infrastructure and preventing future tragedies.
