Special Summary Revision of Voter Lists Begins in Delhi
The Special Summary Revision of voter lists for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections commenced on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched the process at a function held at the Delhi Secretariat, calling it a 'yajna of democracy' and urging all eligible citizens to enroll and ensure their names are on the electoral roll.
CM Rekha Gupta's Appeal to Citizens
Speaking at the event, CM Rekha Gupta emphasized the importance of every vote in strengthening democracy. She said, "This revision is not just a routine exercise but a sacred ritual—a yajna of democracy. I appeal to all residents of Delhi, especially first-time voters, to come forward and get registered." The Chief Minister also directed officials to ensure maximum coverage and error-free lists.
Key Dates and Details
The revision process will continue until December 4, 2024. During this period, eligible voters can submit claims and objections for inclusion, deletion, or correction of entries in the electoral rolls. The Election Commission of India has set November 5 as the qualifying date for age eligibility (18 years as of that date). Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door verification to update the lists. As per the Election Commission, Delhi currently has over 1.5 crore registered voters, and the revision aims to add approximately 2 lakh new voters, including first-time voters and those who have turned 18.
Impact on Upcoming Assembly Elections
The updated voter list will be the final roll for the Delhi Assembly elections, expected to be held in early 2025. Political parties have welcomed the move, with many stressing the need for accurate lists to ensure free and fair elections. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which currently governs Delhi, has urged its workers to assist citizens in the registration process. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also supported the revision, with its Delhi unit president stating, "Every eligible voter must be on the list. We will cooperate with the election authorities."
How to Enroll
Citizens can register online through the National Voters' Service Portal (NVSP) or by visiting their nearest voter registration center. Required documents include proof of age, address, and identity. The Election Commission has also set up a helpline number (1950) for queries. For those who have changed residence, Form 6 can be used for new registration, while Form 7 is for deletion of names due to death or shifting.
