DMK-Congress Alliance Talks Stalled Over Seat-Sharing Disagreement
Seat-sharing discussions between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Indian National Congress have encountered a significant roadblock, with Congress refusing to accept the numbers proposed by its principal ally. The stalemate has intensified as leaders from both parties continue to express conflicting views, particularly regarding the allocation of a Rajya Sabha seat.
Kanimozhi's Crucial Meeting in Delhi
DMK MP Kanimozhi is scheduled to meet Congress leaders in Delhi on Friday, following her parliamentary committee meeting in the morning. According to sources, she has sought an appointment with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to explain the DMK's inability to meet Congress's demands. Kanimozhi will outline the reasons behind the DMK's stance, emphasizing the inclusion of more alliance partners as a key factor limiting seat allocations to allies.
Negotiation Details and Discontent
During a meeting with All India Congress Committee (AICC) member Girish Chodankar on February 23, Kanimozhi requested that Congress settle for 27 seats. Chodankar conveyed this proposal to the Congress high command, which reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the numbers. A DMK source stated, "We started with an offer of 25 seats and increased it by two, but they do not seem content with this arrangement." This discontent has fueled tensions between the two parties.
Rajya Sabha Seat Allocation Adds to Tensions
The disagreement extends beyond Lok Sabha seats to include a Rajya Sabha seat, further complicating the alliance talks. DMK sources revealed that Kanimozhi communicated to Chodankar that Congress could only be granted a Rajya Sabha seat in 2028. However, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai sought to dispel speculations, asserting that the Congress-DMK alliance remains strong. He announced, "A Congress candidate will file a nomination for a Rajya Sabha seat in a couple of days under the DMK alliance."
Rumors and Alliance Stability
The ongoing stalemate has sparked rumors that Congress might be reopening communication channels with other political entities, such as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). In response, Selvaperunthagai emphasized the alliance's resilience, aiming to quell any doubts about its future. Despite these assurances, the deadlock highlights the challenges in balancing the interests of multiple alliance partners within the DMK-led coalition.
As negotiations continue, both parties are under pressure to resolve their differences to maintain a united front in upcoming political contests. The outcome of Kanimozhi's meeting in Delhi could be pivotal in determining the future trajectory of this crucial alliance.
