DVAC Raids DMK Leader Velu's Properties Days After CM's Anti-Corruption Pledge
DVAC Raids DMK Leader Velu Properties After CM Pledge

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) on Thursday raided multiple properties linked to DMK leader and former minister E V Velu, just days after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay vowed to crack down on corruption in the state.

Raids Conducted Across Multiple Locations

According to DVAC officials, searches were carried out at Velu's residences and offices in Chennai, Vellore, and other districts. The raids are part of an ongoing investigation into alleged disproportionate assets and corrupt practices during his tenure as a minister in the previous DMK government.

A senior DVAC officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that documents and digital evidence were seized. “We are examining records related to property acquisitions and financial transactions that appear inconsistent with known sources of income,” the officer said.

CM Vijay's Anti-Corruption Pledge

The action against Velu comes days after Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, who leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, promised in a public address to take strict action against those involved in corruption in previous administrations. “No one, regardless of their political affiliation, will be spared if they have indulged in corrupt practices,” Vijay had stated on June 20.

Velu, a senior DMK leader and former minister for public works, has denied any wrongdoing. In a statement, he called the raids “politically motivated” and said he would cooperate with the investigation.

Political Reactions

The DMK has accused the TVK government of using investigative agencies to target opposition leaders. Party spokesperson A Raja said, “This is a clear abuse of power. The DVAC is being used as a tool to settle political scores.”

Meanwhile, TVK leaders have defended the raids, with party general secretary Balu stating, “The CM has made his stance clear. These actions are in line with his promise to ensure accountability.”

Background on E V Velu

E V Velu, a prominent DMK figure, served as the Minister for Public Works in the previous DMK government led by M K Stalin. He has been a member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for several terms and is considered a key organizer for the party in northern districts.

The DVAC investigation is expected to continue, with further summons likely for Velu and his associates. The development marks a significant escalation in the TVK government’s anti-corruption drive, which has so far focused on cases from the previous DMK regime.
