Rising Stray Dog Attacks in Punjab
This incident has once again highlighted the growing menace of stray dogs in Punjab. In recent months, several cases of dog attacks have been reported across the state, leading to public outrage and demands for stricter measures. According to local residents, the number of stray dogs in Doda village has increased significantly, with packs roaming freely even during daytime.
"We have been complaining to the municipal authorities for months, but no action has been taken. Now a man has lost his life," said a villager who wished to remain anonymous.
Police Investigation Underway
Police have registered a case under relevant sections and are investigating the matter. They have also alerted the animal husbandry department to capture the stray dogs. Meanwhile, the victim's family has demanded compensation and strict action against the authorities for negligence.
"My father was the sole breadwinner. We demand justice and a compensation of Rs 10 lakh," said the victim's son, Harpreet Singh.
Government Response
Punjab's Animal Husbandry Minister said the government is taking steps to control the stray dog population, including sterilization drives and awareness campaigns. "We are working on a comprehensive plan to address this issue. The local administration has been directed to take immediate action in Moga," he said.
According to official data, over 1,000 dog bite cases are reported in Punjab every month, with at least 10 fatalities annually. The state has an estimated stray dog population of over 2 lakh.
