At least eight people have been killed in flash floods and landslides triggered by incessant heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh over the past two days, officials said on Tuesday. Several others are reported missing, and rescue operations are ongoing in the affected districts.
Details of the Incident
The floods and landslides have affected multiple districts, including capital Itanagar, Papum Pare, Lower Subansiri, and East Kameng. In Itanagar, three members of a family were killed when a landslide buried their house in the Chimpu area late Monday night. The deceased have been identified as Tania Taba (35), her son Tani Taba (10), and daughter Tania Taba (6). In Papum Pare district, two persons died in a landslide at Sagalee, while one death each was reported from Lower Subansiri and East Kameng districts.
The heavy rainfall has also caused rivers to swell, leading to flooding in low-lying areas. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed for rescue and relief operations. Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed grief over the loss of lives and directed the administration to expedite rescue efforts.
Impact and Rescue Operations
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, at least 10 people are still missing, and over 200 houses have been damaged. The floods have also disrupted road connectivity in several areas, with major highways blocked due to landslides. The administration has set up relief camps for the affected families and is providing food and medical assistance.
In a statement, Chief Minister Khandu said, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to flash floods and landslides in various parts of the state. I have directed the district administrations to ensure speedy rescue and relief operations. My thoughts are with the bereaved families." He also urged people to stay safe and follow advisories from the disaster management authorities.
Weather Forecast and Precautions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Arunachal Pradesh, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two to three days. The IMD has warned of further landslides, flash floods, and damage to vulnerable structures. People living in low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer locations, and fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea.
The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. The rescue teams are using boats and heavy machinery to clear debris and reach stranded people. The situation is being closely monitored by the state administration, and more teams have been kept on standby.
