Gehlot Questions Justice in Kanhaiya Lal Murder; Accuses BJP of Poll Ploy

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday questioned the 'elusive' justice in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party of exploiting the issue for electoral gains. He urged people of the state to see through the BJP's 'politics' on the matter, alleging the party played with public sentiments.

Gehlot's Allegations Against BJP

Speaking to reporters, Gehlot said, 'The BJP has been using the Kanhaiya Lal murder case to polarise voters and divert attention from real issues. They have no intention of ensuring justice; they only want to benefit politically.' He claimed that the ruling party at the centre had failed to deliver justice to the victim's family.

Background of the Case

Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Udaipur, was brutally murdered in June 2022 by two men who posted a video online claiming allegiance to the Islamic State. The case sparked nationwide outrage and was taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Despite the arrest of the accused, the trial has been delayed, and the family continues to seek justice.

Political Reactions

Gehlot's remarks come ahead of the Rajasthan assembly elections scheduled later this year. The Congress leader accused the BJP of using the case to communalise the atmosphere. 'The BJP has a history of exploiting tragedies for political mileage. They did it in the past and are doing it now,' he said.

In response, BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bhardwaj dismissed Gehlot's allegations, stating, 'The Congress government in Rajasthan has failed to maintain law and order. Instead of pointing fingers, Gehlot should ensure swift justice in the case.'

Impact on State Politics

Political analysts believe that the Kanhaiya Lal case has become a flashpoint in Rajasthan's electoral landscape. The murder, which took place in the state, has been used by both parties to rally their support bases. While the Congress accuses the BJP of polarisation, the BJP highlights the law-and-order situation under the Congress government.

Gehlot urged citizens to remain vigilant and not fall prey to divisive politics. 'The people of Rajasthan are wise. They will not be misled by the BJP's propaganda,' he said.
