MP Govind Karjol demands drought declaration for Karnataka
BJP MP Govind Karjol has demanded that the Karnataka government declare the state as drought-hit, alleging that the delay is aimed at bypassing reservation benefits provided to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities in electricity-related works. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Karjol said that several regions in the state are facing severe drought conditions, yet the government has not officially declared a drought.
Allegations of bypassing reservation benefits
Karjol alleged that the move to avoid declaring drought is intended to sidestep the mandatory reservation for SC/ST communities in contracts and jobs related to electricity works. He claimed that without a drought declaration, the government can award contracts without adhering to reservation norms. "The government is deliberately delaying the drought declaration to deprive SC/ST communities of their rightful benefits," he said.
Impact on farmers and regions
The MP pointed out that farmers in several districts, including Bagalkot, Vijayapura, and Belagavi, are suffering due to lack of rainfall. He demanded immediate relief measures and compensation for affected farmers. According to Karjol, the delay in declaring drought has prevented farmers from accessing government schemes and financial assistance.
Government response awaited
Karjol urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to declare drought in the state at the earliest, warning of protests if the demand is not met. He also questioned the government's criteria for drought declaration, noting that the situation has worsened over the past two months. The state government has not yet responded to his demands.
