Heavy rains have wreaked havoc across West Bengal, triggering landslides and causing a bridge to collapse in Darjeeling, while Kolkata has been left waterlogged. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Landslides and Bridge Collapse in Darjeeling
In Darjeeling, incessant rainfall led to multiple landslides, blocking roads and disrupting normal life. A bridge collapsed in the area, further hampering connectivity. Rescue teams have been deployed to clear debris and assist affected residents.
Kolkata Waterlogging
Kolkata experienced severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas, causing traffic snarls and inconvenience to commuters. The municipal corporation has deployed pumps to drain out water, but many roads remain submerged.
Orange Alert and Precautions
The orange alert warns of potential flooding, landslides, and damage to infrastructure in the affected districts. Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.
The IMD has predicted that the heavy rainfall may continue for the next 24 to 48 hours, with isolated areas receiving extremely heavy downpours. Emergency services remain on standby to handle any further incidents.
