PM Modi to Lead Yoga Day Celebrations in Kolkata
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lead the main International Yoga Day 2026 celebrations in Kolkata on June 21. The event will take place at the iconic Red Road, a historic venue in the city. This marks the first time the national event will be held in West Bengal, highlighting the government's effort to spread yoga across all regions.
International Yoga Day, observed annually on June 21, was first proposed by PM Modi in 2014 at the United Nations General Assembly. Since then, it has grown into a global phenomenon, with millions participating in yoga sessions worldwide. The theme for 2026 is 'Yoga for Self and Society,' emphasizing both personal well-being and community harmony.
Events and Programmes Across India
In addition to the main event in Kolkata, yoga demonstrations and workshops will be held in all state capitals and major cities. The Ministry of Ayush has coordinated with state governments to organize mass yoga sessions at public parks, schools, and offices. Special programmes are planned for government employees, with many offices scheduling morning yoga breaks.
According to Ayush Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, over 10,000 participants are expected at the Red Road event alone. 'This year's celebration is unique as it connects the heritage of Kolkata with the ancient practice of yoga,' he said. The event will feature performances by yoga experts and cultural troupes.
Global Observances and Theme
Worldwide, Indian embassies and cultural centers will host yoga sessions. The United Nations will hold a special event at its headquarters in New York, with live streaming of the Kolkata ceremony. The theme 'Yoga for Self and Society' underscores yoga's role in fostering mental health and social cohesion, especially post-pandemic.
In 2025, over 180 countries participated in International Yoga Day. This year, the number is expected to exceed 190. The Ministry of External Affairs has partnered with local organizations to ensure wide participation.
Rain Forecast and Preparations
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain in Kolkata on June 21. However, organizers have made arrangements for covered venues and tents to ensure the event proceeds smoothly. 'We are prepared for any weather condition. The spirit of yoga is unaffected by rain,' said a senior official from the Ministry of Ayush.
Similar contingency plans are in place for other cities. Participants are advised to carry umbrellas and arrive early.
History of International Yoga Day
The first International Yoga Day was celebrated in 2015 at Rajpath in New Delhi, with PM Modi leading a record-breaking session. Since then, the event has rotated across cities, including Chandigarh, Dehradun, and Mysuru. Kolkata's selection for 2026 reflects the government's focus on eastern India.
Yoga, originating from ancient India, encompasses physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation. The United Nations recognized its universal appeal by adopting the resolution in 2014.
