CM Mohan Yadav Announces Renaming of Jabalpur Airport
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on June 24, 2026, that Jabalpur Airport will be renamed as Rani Durgavati Airport. The decision was made during a public event in Jabalpur, where CM Yadav highlighted the historical significance of the 16th-century Gond queen who ruled the region.
Why Rani Durgavati?
Rani Durgavati, a valiant queen of the Gondwana kingdom, is remembered for her resistance against the Mughal Empire. She ruled from 1550 to 1564 and is a symbol of courage and regional pride. CM Yadav stated, "Renaming the airport after Rani Durgavati is a tribute to her bravery and a step towards preserving our cultural heritage."
Impact on Local Economy and Tourism
The renaming is expected to boost tourism in the region, as Jabalpur is a gateway to tourist attractions like the Marble Rocks and Kanha National Park. Local business leaders have welcomed the move, with chamber of commerce president Rajesh Agarwal saying, "This will put Jabalpur on the global map and attract more visitors."
Previous Renaming Efforts
This is not the first attempt to rename the airport. In 2021, a proposal was submitted by local politicians but stalled due to administrative hurdles. The current state government expedited the process, with the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation approving the name change earlier this month.
Reactions from Political Leaders
Opposition Congress leaders criticized the timing, calling it a political move ahead of the 2028 state elections. However, BJP leaders defended the decision, emphasizing its cultural significance. MP (Jabalpur) Rakesh Singh said, "This is a long-pending demand of the people, and we are proud to fulfill it."
Official Ceremony and Future Plans
The official renaming ceremony is scheduled for August 15, 2026, coinciding with Independence Day. CM Yadav also announced plans to upgrade airport infrastructure, including a new terminal building, at a cost of ₹500 crore. The airport currently handles 1.2 million passengers annually, and the upgrade aims to increase capacity by 50%.
