Kapil Sibal Slams BJP Over Ram Temple Donation Controversy
Kapil Sibal Attacks BJP on Ram Temple Donation Row

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the alleged misuse of donations collected for the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Sibal said, "Ram ko loota, desh ko loota" (They looted Ram and looted the nation), accusing the ruling party of exploiting religious sentiments for political and financial gain.

Sibal's Allegations in Parliament

During the ongoing winter session of Parliament, Sibal raised the issue of the Ram temple donation row, claiming that the BJP had collected crores of rupees from devotees under the pretext of building the temple but had not accounted for the funds transparently. He demanded a thorough investigation into the matter, stating that the trust responsible for the temple construction should be held accountable for any financial irregularities.

Sibal further alleged that the BJP had used the temple issue to divert attention from pressing national concerns such as unemployment, inflation, and agricultural distress. "The BJP is using the Ram temple as a political tool to cover up its failures on the economic and social fronts," he said.

BJP's Response

The BJP dismissed Sibal's allegations as baseless and politically motivated. Union Minister and BJP leader Pralhad Joshi countered Sibal's claims, asserting that the Ram temple construction was a matter of faith and that all donations were being managed transparently by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. "The Congress is trying to create a controversy where none exists. The trust has been collecting donations with full transparency, and the temple construction is progressing as per schedule," Joshi said.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra also accused Sibal of disrespecting the sentiments of millions of Hindus. "Sibal's comments are an insult to the faith of crores of devotees who have contributed to the building of the Ram temple. The Congress has always opposed the temple, and this is another attempt to undermine Hindu sentiments," Patra added.

Background of the Donation Row

The controversy erupted after reports emerged that the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust had collected over Rs 3,000 crore in donations from across the country. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have questioned the utilization of these funds, demanding a detailed audit. The trust, however, has maintained that it is following all legal and financial norms.

The Ram temple in Ayodhya is being built on the site where the Babri Masjid once stood. The Supreme Court, in a landmark verdict in November 2019, cleared the way for the construction of the temple, while also directing the government to allocate an alternative plot for a mosque. The temple's construction is expected to be completed by 2024.

Political Implications

The temple donation row has become a flashpoint in Indian politics, with the Congress and other opposition parties using it to target the BJP ahead of the 2024 general elections. Sibal's strong remarks in Parliament reflect the opposition's strategy to question the BJP's credibility on issues of governance and transparency.

Political analysts believe that the controversy could impact the BJP's narrative of development and good governance. "The Ram temple is a core issue for the BJP's voter base. Any allegations of financial mismanagement could potentially erode trust among its supporters," said Professor Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, a political commentator.

Public Reaction

The public reaction to Sibal's comments has been mixed. While BJP supporters have condemned his remarks, some opposition sympathizers have praised him for raising the issue. Social media platforms have been abuzz with debates, with hashtags like #RamKoLootaDeshKoLoota trending on Twitter.

As the political battle intensifies, the Congress has demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the temple donations. The BJP, however, has rejected the demand, calling it a diversionary tactic.
