Karnataka Congress MLCs Meet Surjewala, Seek Clarity on Leadership

In a significant development within the Karnataka Congress, a delegation of party MLCs met with senior party leader Randeep Surjewala on Tuesday to seek clarity on the ongoing leadership issue in the state unit. The meeting, held at Surjewala's residence in New Delhi, comes amid growing demands from party workers and legislators for a clear direction on who will lead the party in the state ahead of the next assembly elections.

Delegation Expresses Concerns

The MLCs, representing various districts of Karnataka, expressed their concerns over the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the state leadership. They urged Surjewala to intervene and ensure that the party's top brass addresses the matter promptly. The delegation emphasized that a lack of clarity was affecting party morale and organizational work at the grassroots level.

Surjewala's Assurance

Surjewala, who is the Congress's Karnataka in-charge, listened patiently to the delegation's grievances and assured them that he would bring their plea to the notice of the party's top leadership, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi. He urged the MLCs to remain united and focus on strengthening the party's base in the state.

“I understand your concerns and will ensure that the high command is apprised of the situation at the earliest. The party values your dedication and expects you to continue working for the people of Karnataka,” Surjewala told the delegation.

Background of the Issue

The leadership issue in Karnataka Congress has been simmering for months, with several senior leaders staking claim to the post of state party chief. The current state president, D.K. Shivakumar, has been at the helm since 2019, but there have been murmurs of a change in leadership to revive the party's fortunes. The MLCs' meeting with Surjewala is seen as an attempt to expedite a decision from the high command.

Political Implications

Political analysts believe that the resolution of the leadership issue is crucial for the Congress party in Karnataka, which is the only major state in southern India where the party is in power. A clear and decisive leader can help the party consolidate its position and counter the challenges posed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and other opposition forces.

The MLCs, after the meeting, expressed satisfaction with Surjewala's response and said they were hopeful that the high command would take a decision soon. “We have full faith in the party leadership and are confident that they will resolve this matter in the best interest of the party and the state,” said one of the MLCs on condition of anonymity.

As the Congress gears up for the next assembly elections in Karnataka, expected in 2028, the party is leaving no stone unturned to address internal issues and present a united front. The meeting with Surjewala is a step in that direction.
