The newly formed Congress-UDF government in Kerala, led by Chief Minister V D Satheesan, held its first cabinet meeting on Monday and decided to implement all five 'Indira guarantees' that were promised during the election campaign. The decisions were announced after the meeting, marking a swift move to fulfill the pre-poll commitments.
Key Decisions Taken in the First Cabinet Meeting
The cabinet approved the implementation of free bus travel for women across the state, a flagship promise aimed at enhancing mobility and economic participation. Additionally, a new department dedicated to elderly care will be established, reflecting the government's focus on social welfare.
Other Indira Guarantees
The remaining three guarantees include increased pension for senior citizens, free health insurance coverage up to Rs 5 lakh per family, and a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 for unemployed youth. These measures are expected to be rolled out in phases, with the first set of benefits to be available within 100 days.
Chief Minister Satheesan stated that the cabinet has also directed officials to prepare a detailed implementation roadmap and ensure adequate budgetary allocations. The government aims to fund these schemes through efficient tax collection and reallocation of existing resources.
The decisions have been widely welcomed by UDF supporters, while opposition parties have questioned the fiscal feasibility. The cabinet meeting also reviewed the state's financial situation and discussed strategies to boost revenue without burdening the common people.
