Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi government, accusing it of turning Delhi University (DU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) into propaganda machines to intimidate students. The criticism came after both universities issued warnings asking students to stay away from protest sites, particularly Jantar Mantar.
"Students are on ground zero because the Modi government is now using these much-respected universities as propaganda outlets to bully them," Kharge said in a statement. He asserted that the government is stifling dissent by threatening academic institutions.
Kharge's Accusations Over University Warnings
Kharge elaborated that the warnings from DU and JNU are a direct assault on academic freedom. "Free speech is under attack. The government cannot hide behind university administrations to curb student protests," he remarked. Jantar Mantar has historically been a site for peaceful demonstrations, and Kharge insisted that students have every right to gather there.
The Congress chief also questioned the role of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who has not yet commented on the controversy. Kharge demanded an explanation from the minister on why universities are being used to suppress student voices.
