Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party following the alleged assault on party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. In a social media post, Moitra claimed that a BJP worker identified as Sushmita Dutta was caught on camera pelting stones at Banerjee. She rejected claims that ordinary citizens were behind the incident and accused the BJP of spreading misinformation and engaging in what she termed as 'competitive hooliganism.'
Details of the Incident
The attack reportedly took place while Abhishek Banerjee was visiting families affected by post-poll violence in the area. Banerjee alleged that bricks, stones, and eggs were hurled at him, describing the incident as a BJP-sponsored attack aimed at harming him. He further claimed that the police failed to provide adequate security despite being informed about his visit. Banerjee stated that the matter would be raised before the Calcutta High Court and the Governor, while legal action would also be pursued.
Political Reactions
Moitra's allegations have intensified the political slugfest between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal. She emphasized that the involvement of a BJP worker undermines the party's claims of innocence. Meanwhile, Banerjee has called for a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from TMC leaders, who have accused the BJP of attempting to destabilize the state's law and order.
Legal and Administrative Steps
Banerjee has announced plans to approach the Calcutta High Court and the Governor to seek justice. Additionally, he confirmed that legal proceedings would be initiated against the perpetrators. The TMC has demanded that the police take immediate action and ensure the safety of political leaders during public engagements.
The attack on Banerjee comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal following the recent elections. Both parties have exchanged accusations of violence and misconduct, with the TMC alleging a pattern of BJP-sponsored aggression. The incident has further strained relations between the two parties, raising concerns about the security of political workers in the state.
