Mullanpur Dakha MLA and Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) leader Manpreet Singh Ayali on June 27, 2026, called on Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal to obey the Akal Takht's directive and resign from their positions. Ayali, who recently switched from SAD to the Waris Punjab De outfit, accused both leaders of defying the temporal Sikh authority's edict.
Ayali Demands Mann's Resignation
Ayali stated that Mann should abandon confrontation, offer his resignation, and humbly present himself before the Akal Takht. He emphasized that the chief minister must respect the religious institution's authority.
Sukhbir Badal's Failure to Step Down
According to Ayali, the Akal Takht issued an edict against Sukhbir Badal in December 2024, but the SAD chief has failed to step down from his position as party president. Ayali added that he himself would appear before the Akal Takht on June 29 as a humble Sikh, setting an example of compliance.
Political Context
Ayali's remarks come amid ongoing tensions between political leaders and religious institutions in Punjab. The Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhism, occasionally issues edicts (hukamnama) on matters of religious and moral importance. Failure to comply is seen as a serious breach of Sikh discipline.
