Bhagwat Calls for Parental Responsibility in Digital Age

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has urged parents to lead by example to protect their children from the harmful effects of social media. Speaking at an event on 25 July 2026, Bhagwat emphasized that parents must model healthy digital habits rather than simply imposing restrictions.

Emotional Intelligence Over IQ

"Today's terminology speaks of IQ and EQ. Emotional intelligence is what really matters. Intelligence alone is not enough. We have all seen brilliant people who fail in life because they cannot cope with setbacks," Bhagwat said, according to a PTI report. He stressed that emotional resilience is key to navigating life's challenges, including the pressures of social media.

Setting the Right Example

Bhagwat advised parents to be mindful of their own screen time and online behavior. "Children learn from what they see at home. If parents constantly scroll through their phones, children will imitate that," he warned. The RSS chief called for a "digital detox" in family routines, encouraging more face-to-face interactions and outdoor activities.

He also highlighted the need for open conversations about the pitfalls of social media, such as cyberbullying, misinformation, and addiction. Parents should guide children without being overly authoritarian, he added.

Context of Bhagwat's Remarks

This is not the first time Bhagwat has spoken about the impact of technology on society. He has previously advocated for a balanced approach to modernity while preserving traditional values. The remarks come amid growing concerns in India over children's exposure to harmful online content. A 2025 survey by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights found that 68% of Indian teenagers faced cyberbullying, and 45% reported feeling anxious after using social media.

Reactions and Implications

Bhagwat's statement has resonated with many parenting groups and educators. Child psychologist Dr. Anjali Sharma commented, "His emphasis on emotional intelligence aligns with current research. Parents often focus on academic success, but EQ is a better predictor of long-term well-being." The RSS chief's call is expected to influence discourse on digital parenting in India.
