Mumbai's New Mayor Ritu Tawde Pledges to Serve as 'Sevak' with Focus on Infrastructure and Civic Upgrades
After taking oath as Mumbai's mayor, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ritu Tawde declared on Wednesday that she would work as the city's 'Sevak' or servant, prioritizing infrastructure enhancement and basic civic amenities. She emphasized a neutral approach and openness to suggestions from Opposition members, aiming to uplift Mumbai's civic facilities collectively.
Infrastructure Momentum and Civic Priorities
Ritu Tawde highlighted that upgrading infrastructure and improving health, sanitation, and water supply would be the primary focus of the Mahayuti-led elected body. She referenced Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's emphasis on development, vowing to sustain the momentum of ongoing and proposed projects like the coastal road and Mumbai metro.
"Instead of keeping myself confined within the mayor's office, I will work as Mumbai's Sevak," Tawde told reporters. "I have been a grassroots level party worker for 22 years and will continue to do so. I welcome any suggestion from opposing parties since our common goal is to uplift civic facilities."
Key Projects and Environmental Concerns
Tawde outlined specific initiatives to ensure timely completion of projects such as road concretisation, coastal road phase 2, and the Gargai dam. She also addressed environmental issues, pledging to mitigate air pollution and upgrade Rajawadi hospital into an AIIMS-like facility to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.
Additionally, she focused on water supply challenges, stating, "Over the past 25 years, Mumbaikars have faced issues like uneven water supply. My objective is to ensure water reaches every legal household and end the tanker mafia in Mumbai."
Political Context and Future Outlook
Tawde noted Mumbai's infrastructure growth post-2014 under Devendra Fadnavis, acknowledging a temporary stall during the Uddhav Thackeray-led government before resuming with Mahayuti's return to power. Her approach combines political experience with a commitment to public service, aiming to drive sustainable development for India's financial capital.
