Several Muslim organisations in Karnataka have urged the state Congress to consider nominating a Muslim candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The appeal comes amid discussions within the party over seat allocation, with the community seeking enhanced political representation.
Demand for Representation
Leaders from various Muslim bodies met with senior Congress officials in Bengaluru, emphasising the need for a Muslim face in the upper house of Parliament. They argued that the community has historically been underrepresented in the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka and that the Congress party, which has traditionally enjoyed support from Muslims, should address this disparity.
Political Context
The Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka are falling vacant due to the retirement of several members. The Congress party, which is in power in the state, has the opportunity to nominate candidates for these vacancies. The Muslim organisations have stressed that a Muslim candidate would strengthen the party's bond with the minority community, especially ahead of future elections.
In a memorandum submitted to the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, the organisations highlighted that the Congress has previously fielded Muslim candidates for the Rajya Sabha from other states but not from Karnataka in recent years. They called for rectifying this imbalance.
Party's Response
Congress leaders have acknowledged the demand and assured the delegations that their concerns would be considered during the selection process. However, no final decision has been taken yet. The party is likely to weigh various factors, including caste equations and electoral strategies, before finalising its candidates.
The development comes at a time when the Congress is trying to consolidate its minority vote bank, which has been a crucial support base for the party in Karnataka. The community's assertion for a Rajya Sabha seat is seen as a test of the party's commitment to inclusive representation.
