Nagpur Ramtek Deploys Drones After Fatal Tiger Attacks Near Pench Reserve
In a decisive response to escalating fears, authorities in Nagpur's Ramtek taluka are set to deploy drones to scan forest fringes and vulnerable hamlets. This urgent measure follows two fatal tiger attacks this month, which have instilled deep anxiety among residents living along the buffer zone of the Pench Tiger Reserve.
Fear Grips Villages as Tiger Attacks Claim Lives
The atmosphere in Savara village and nearby settlements is one of palpable dread, with residents living in fear of a suspected man-eater. The community has urgently appealed to their public representatives to spearhead concrete solutions aimed at preventing further loss of life. In response, Ramtek Lok Sabha MP Shyam Barve chaired a critical meeting with the state forest department, culminating in the decision to deploy drones and augment forest personnel to track the elusive big cat.
During this high-stakes meeting, former state minister Rajendra Mulak voiced serious concerns regarding the safety of individuals residing in the affected area. Meanwhile, the daily lives of villagers in Savara and surrounding regions remain overshadowed by anxiety. Residents are now exercising extreme caution when venturing out after dusk, demanding visible patrols as authorities ramp up aerial surveillance efforts.
Authorities Intensify Operations and Deploy Technology
According to MP Shyam Barve, the two separate fatal incidents occurred on February 8 and 20, with preliminary investigations strongly indicating tiger attacks. This development aligns with recent reports highlighting that over 20 tigers are prowling perilously close to Nagpur city, raising significant safety alarms.
Post-meeting with Barve and Mulak, the forest department has resolved to intensify its ongoing operations. Barve confirmed that a special team will be constituted specifically to trace the tiger. In addition to drone deployment, the department will significantly increase the use of trap cameras across identified wildlife corridors and movement routes. Field staff have received strict instructions to maintain continuous monitoring in fringe areas where human activities intersect with forest stretches.
Enhanced Security Measures and Community Support
Round-the-clock patrolling will be substantially strengthened in vulnerable villages, particularly those adjacent to forest patches. The primary objective is to ensure early detection of animal movements and to reassure residents who have expressed grave concerns over their safety during essential daily routines, such as farm work and cattle grazing.
Participants in the meeting unanimously emphasized that there would be absolutely no compromise on citizen safety. They called for stronger inter-divisional coordination to eliminate delays in emergency responses. The review also underscored the necessity for improved communication channels between ground teams and senior officials, facilitating swifter decision-making in the event of new tiger sightings.
Compensation and Awareness Initiatives Announced
The administration has pledged to expedite financial assistance and compensation to the families of the victims, adhering strictly to existing rules. Concurrently, comprehensive awareness drives will be conducted through gram sabhas to educate villagers about crucial precautionary measures and safe practices in forest-adjacent areas.
The meeting saw the presence of key local figures, including former zilla parishad member Shantatai Kumre, Rajkumar Kusumbe, Kailash Raut, former deputy chairperson of Parseoni Panchayat Samiti Chetan Deshmukh, Sudhir Nakhale, and Mukesh Pendam, reflecting a unified community and administrative front against the looming threat.
