Netra AWACS Achieves Final Operational Clearance
India's indigenous airborne early warning and control system (AWACS), Netra, has received final operational clearance (FOC) from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF). The clearance was granted on June 25, 2026, marking a significant milestone in India's defense capabilities.
Netra, which means 'eye' in Sanskrit, is often referred to as India's 'eye in the sky' due to its ability to detect and track aerial threats from long distances. The system is mounted on an Embraer ERJ-145 platform and is equipped with advanced radar and sensor suites.
Key Features and Capabilities
The Netra AWACS can detect and track multiple targets simultaneously, including aircraft, missiles, and drones, at ranges exceeding 300 kilometers. It features a state-of-the-art active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, which provides 360-degree coverage. The system also includes electronic warfare and communication intelligence capabilities.
According to DRDO officials, the FOC validates that the system meets all operational requirements and is ready for full-scale deployment. The IAF will now integrate Netra into its existing network of early warning systems.
Strategic Importance for India
The final clearance comes amid increasing regional security challenges. Netra enhances India's ability to monitor airspace along its borders with Pakistan and China. It also provides real-time data to ground-based command centers, enabling quicker response times.
DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat stated, "Netra is a testament to India's self-reliance in critical defense technologies. This clearance underscores our commitment to equipping the armed forces with world-class systems."
Indigenous Development and Future Plans
Netra was developed by DRDO's Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) in collaboration with various Indian industries. The project has significantly boosted the domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem. The government plans to develop a larger AWACS platform based on the Airbus A330 in the future.
The IAF currently operates three Netra systems, and additional units are under production. The FOC will pave the way for series production and potential export to friendly foreign nations.
