Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in the Kolkata warehouse collapse. The announcement came as rescue operations continued at the site of the incident, which occurred in the city's northern part.
PM Modi's announcement and government response
In a statement, the Prime Minister's Office said that the ex gratia would be provided from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. Modi also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He added that the West Bengal government is working round the clock to ensure that those affected receive all possible assistance.
The collapse took place on Wednesday evening, trapping several workers under the debris. Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force and local authorities were immediately deployed to the site.
Details of the incident
The warehouse, located in the Burrabazar area, was used for storing paper and other materials. Preliminary reports suggest that structural weakness may have led to the collapse. The building was reportedly old and had been used for commercial purposes for several years.
According to officials, at least five people were killed and several others injured. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, and their condition is stated to be stable. Rescue operations continued through the night, with teams using heavy machinery to clear the debris.
Impact and ongoing efforts
The collapse has raised questions about building safety in the city. Local residents and traders have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident. The West Bengal government has announced a separate compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased from the state disaster response fund.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the site and assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible. She also announced that the government would bear the medical expenses of the injured.
