PM Modi Leads Yoga Day at Red Road Amid Controversy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed a massive gathering at Kolkata's iconic Red Road on the occasion of International Yoga Day, emphasizing the unifying power of yoga. The event came weeks after the same venue was denied to the Muslim community for Eid prayers by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, sparking a political row.
Unity Message Takes Center Stage
Speaking to thousands of participants, Modi said, "Yoga transcends all barriers of religion, caste, and creed. It brings people together in a spirit of harmony and well-being." He added that the practice of yoga is a gift to the world from ancient India and promotes physical and mental health.
The Prime Minister's remarks were seen as a subtle dig at the TMC government's decision to refuse permission for Eid prayers at the Red Road, a site traditionally used for public gatherings. The TMC had cited security concerns and logistical issues, but critics accused the government of religious discrimination.
Suvendu Adhikari Takes a Jibe at TMC
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who attended the event, subtly criticized the previous TMC regime. In his address, Adhikari said, "We believe in equal opportunities for all. No community should be denied the right to practice their faith or celebrate their festivals." He reiterated his government's commitment to secularism and inclusive governance.
Adhikari took over as chief minister on May 9 after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the state assembly elections, ending 15 years of TMC rule. His remarks were widely interpreted as a direct response to the controversy surrounding the Eid venue denial.
Massive Turnout for Yoga Session
The Yoga Day event saw participation from over 50,000 people, including school children, yoga enthusiasts, and government officials. The Red Road was transformed into a sea of yoga mats as participants performed asanas and breathing exercises under the guidance of certified instructors.
According to the state health department, similar events were organized across all 23 districts of West Bengal, with over 2 million people participating in total. The government also set up free health check-up camps and distributed informational pamphlets on the benefits of yoga.
Political Reactions to the Venue Controversy
The denial of the Red Road for Eid prayers on June 16 had drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and Muslim organizations. The TMC government had argued that the venue was not available due to prior bookings and maintenance work. However, the BJP and other critics accused the TMC of appeasing a particular community while denying space to another.
Modi's choice of the Red Road for the Yoga Day event was seen as a strategic move to highlight the contrast between the BJP's inclusive approach and the TMC's alleged discriminatory policies. Political analysts noted that the timing and location sent a strong message ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in the state.
Yoga as a Tool for Global Unity
In his speech, Modi also highlighted the global appeal of yoga, noting that the United Nations had declared June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014 following India's proposal. He said, "Yoga is not just an exercise; it is a way of life that fosters peace and harmony. It has the power to unite people across borders."
The event concluded with a collective meditation session, followed by the distribution of light refreshments. The Prime Minister later interacted with participants and praised the efforts of the state government in organizing the event.
