PM Modi Calls Voting Essential for Viksit Bharat on Voters' Day

PM Modi Highlights Voting as Sacred Duty on National Voters' Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended warm greetings to all citizens on the occasion of National Voters' Day, urging people to honor the democratic spirit through consistent participation in electoral processes. The Prime Minister emphasized that active voting is essential for strengthening the nation's resolve toward achieving a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).

Commemorating Election Commission's Foundation

National Voters' Day is observed annually on January 25 to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which was established in 1950. This significant day serves multiple purposes: recognizing the importance of voters, encouraging youth participation in democracy, reinforcing democratic values, and promoting universal adult suffrage across the nation.

In a detailed post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi elaborated that National Voters' Day represents an opportunity for "further deepening our faith in the democratic values of our nation." He specifically acknowledged the efforts of those associated with the Election Commission of India, stating, "My compliments to all those associated with the Election Commission of India for their efforts to strengthen our democratic processes."

Voting as Constitutional Privilege and Duty

The Prime Minister articulated a comprehensive perspective on voting rights, stating, "Being a voter is not just a constitutional privilege, but an important duty that gives every citizen a voice in shaping India's future." He called upon citizens to "honor the spirit of our democracy by always taking part in democratic processes, thereby strengthening the foundations of a Viksit Bharat."

Modi further emphasized that "to be a voter is the greatest privilege and responsibility in a democracy," describing voting as a "sacred constitutional right and a mark of participation in Bharat's future." In poetic terms, he characterized voters as the "Bhagya Vidhata of our development journey" and noted that the indelible ink on a voter's finger represents a "badge of honor that ensures our democracy remains vibrant and purposeful."

Union Ministers Echo Democratic Sentiments

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also conveyed his wishes through social media, stating, "This day reminds us that our constitution has given every voter equal power, and the right vote can show our nation the right direction." Shah emphasized the moral responsibility to safeguard the voting system, asserting, "It is our moral responsibility to safeguard our voting system and ensure that no external factor can pollute it." He concluded with a hopeful message: "May on this day we recommit ourselves to the pledge to align the power of our votes to build a developed and powerful India."

Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda extended greetings to citizens, remarking, "This day reminds us of the strength of our democracy and the power of every single vote. Voting is not only a democratic right but also a fundamental duty of every citizen." Nadda further explained that "National Voters' Day encourages greater awareness about the importance of voting and celebrates universal adult franchise, which strengthens the foundation of an inclusive and participatory democratic system."

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh marked the occasion by stating, "On National Voters Day, we reflect on the strength of India's democracy, rooted in free, fair and inclusive elections. I commend the Election Commission of India for its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of the electoral process." Singh added an important call to action: "Let us inspire wider participation, especially among the youth, and uphold the power of the vote with responsibility and pride."

2026 Theme and Election Commission's Role

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has announced that the theme for National Voters' Day 2026 will be 'My India, My Vote,' accompanied by the tagline 'Citizen at the Heart of Indian Democracy.' This thematic focus underscores the central role of individual voters in the democratic framework.

The Election Commission of India serves as the constitutional authority responsible for supervising, directing, and conducting elections throughout the country. Since its establishment, the Commission has conducted 18 general elections to the Lok Sabha and more than 400 State Legislative Assembly elections, demonstrating its extensive experience in managing India's complex electoral processes.

Beyond national and state elections, the Commission also oversees elections to the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament), State Legislative Councils, the Union Territories of Puducherry and the National Capital Territory of Delhi, as well as elections to the offices of the President and Vice President of India. This comprehensive responsibility highlights the Commission's crucial role in maintaining India's democratic integrity across all levels of governance.

The collective messages from India's leadership on National Voters' Day reinforce the fundamental principle that every vote contributes to shaping the nation's destiny, making electoral participation both a right and responsibility essential for democratic vitality.
