PM Modi Accuses Congress of Neglecting Assam's Progress

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a strong critique of the Congress party during his visit to Assam on Saturday. Speaking at the 'Bagurumba Dwhou 2026' cultural program in Guwahati, he directly accused the opposition of failing the northeastern state.

Congress Prioritized Politics Over Development

The Prime Minister stated that Congress deliberately neglected Assam and the broader eastern region for decades. He claimed the party focused on political gains instead of local development needs. "Congress long neglected Assam and the broader eastern region, prioritizing political gain over local development," PM Modi told the gathered crowd.

He further alleged that Congress created unnecessary trouble for Assam rather than solving its problems. According to the Prime Minister, the party even pushed the state toward violence during its rule.

Cultural Disrespect and Opposition to Progress

Modi also criticized Congress for disrespecting Assam's rich cultural heritage. He pointed out that the party opposed giving Bharat Ratna to legendary artist Bhupen Hazarika. The Prime Minister mentioned that Congress leaders mock traditional Assamese attire when he wears it.

Targeting Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge directly, Modi revealed that Kharge's son opposed semiconductor unit installations in Assam. "One Karnataka Minister, who happens to be the Congress President's son, opposed setting up semiconductor units here," he stated.

Two-Day Assam Visit with Cultural Immersion

The Prime Minister is currently on a two-day visit to Assam from January 17 to 18. His schedule included felicitating performers at the traditional Bodo cultural program held at Sarusajai Stadium. Modi also participated in an extensive 4-kilometer roadshow that began near Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.

During the vibrant roadshow concluding at Azara, artists from across Assam performed on elevated roadside platforms. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accompanied the Prime Minister throughout the event. Local residents warmly welcomed the visiting leader along the route.

PM Modi emphasized that his government remains committed to Assam's comprehensive development. He contrasted this with what he described as Congress's historical neglect of the region's potential.
