President Draupadi Murmu Arrives in Jaisalmer for Historic Two-Day Visit
President Draupadi Murmu reached Jaisalmer late on Thursday evening, commencing a significant two-day official visit to Rajasthan. Her itinerary is centered around witnessing the ‘Vayu Shakti-2026’ programme at the Pokhran Field Firing Range on Friday, a major event showcasing India's aerial defense capabilities.
Historic Flight in Indigenous Light Combat Helicopter
In a landmark moment, President Murmu is set to fly in the indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) "Prachand" at the Jaisalmer Air Force Station on Friday morning. This will make her the first Indian President to serve as co-pilot of a combat helicopter, particularly in the strategic border airspace of Jaisalmer. The 25-minute sortie is meticulously planned to include an aerial review of the city and its adjoining areas, with stringent security measures in place to ensure safety.
Role as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces
As the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, President Murmu will receive a comprehensive briefing prior to take-off. Following the flight, her schedule includes:
- Interacting with officers and personnel at the station.
- Participating in a group photograph to commemorate the occasion.
Later in the day, she will attend the Vayu Shakti exercise as the chief guest, underscoring her leadership role in military affairs.
Vayu Shakti-2026: A Grand Display of Air Power
The Vayu Shakti event is heralded as the Indian Air Force's largest firepower demonstration, designed to display operational readiness and technological prowess. It will be held in the presence of a high-profile gathering, including:
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
- Governor Haribhau Bagde
- Chief Minister Bhajan Lal
- The Union Civil Aviation Minister
- The chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force
- Defence attachés from friendly nations
Air Force Deputy Chief Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor provided details on the scale of the exercise, noting that it will involve approximately 12,000 kg of ammunition. A formidable fleet has been assembled for the demonstration, with 77 fighter aircraft and 43 helicopters assigned for firing and operational roles. This showcase aims to highlight the Air Force's ability to respond effectively across multiple fronts simultaneously, reinforcing national security.
