President Droupadi Murmu Flies Indigenous LCH Prachand Near India-Pakistan Border
In a significant display of India's growing defense prowess, President Droupadi Murmu on Friday undertook a sortie in the indigenously developed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) 'Prachand' near the India–Pakistan border in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district. The event underscores the nation's commitment to self-reliance in military technology and the operational readiness of its armed forces.
Historic Flight from Jaisalmer Air Force Station
The helicopter took off from the Indian Air Force station in Jaisalmer, where President Murmu was briefed by the captain before the flight. Dressed in an olive-green flying suit and helmet, she was seen waving confidently from the cockpit prior to departure, symbolizing leadership and support for the armed forces. This sortie not only highlights the capabilities of the LCH but also reinforces the President's active engagement with military advancements.
Capabilities of the LCH Prachand
Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the LCH 'Prachand' is India’s first indigenously designed and developed combat helicopter. It is engineered for operations across diverse terrains, including deserts and high-altitude regions, with the ability to operate at altitudes exceeding 5,000 metres. This makes it particularly suited for deployment along India’s mountainous borders, enhancing strategic defense capabilities.
Equipped with advanced avionics, stealth characteristics, and night-attack capability, the helicopter carries a formidable arsenal. Its weapons include air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles, rockets, and a 20 mm gun, significantly bolstering the operational strength of the Indian Air Force. The platform represents a leap forward in indigenous defense manufacturing, reducing dependency on foreign imports.
President Murmu's Military Aviation Milestones
This is not the first time President Murmu has undertaken a military sortie, showcasing her dedication to understanding and promoting India's defense infrastructure. In October last year, she flew in a Rafale fighter aircraft at the Air Force Station in Ambala, becoming the first Indian President to have flown in two different fighter aircraft of the IAF.
Earlier, in April 2023, she undertook a sortie in a Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft from the Tezpur Air Force Station in Assam. The 30-minute flight covered areas over the Brahmaputra and Tezpur valley, offering panoramic views of the Himalayan region and further demonstrating her involvement in military affairs.
Upcoming Vayu Shakti Demonstration
Later in the day, President Murmu is scheduled to attend the Indian Air Force’s major firepower demonstration 'Vayu Shakti' at the Pokhran Field Firing Range near the India–Pakistan border. This event will showcase the IAF's combat readiness and technological advancements, aligning with the broader narrative of national security and defense preparedness highlighted by her sortie.
The President's participation in such activities not only boosts morale within the armed forces but also sends a strong message of India's defensive capabilities to the global community. It emphasizes the nation's strides in indigenous defense production and strategic autonomy.
