The Punjab government has initiated a new policy to post women employees within 40 kilometers of their parental or marital homes, aiming to improve work-life balance. The Department of Personnel issued a circular on June 19, directing all administrative departments to submit details of female employees in Groups B, C, and D who are currently posted beyond this radius.
Policy Details
The initiative, announced by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on June 16, initially covered Group C and D employees. However, the latest circular extends the benefit to Group B employees as well. Eligible categories include teachers, staff nurses, women police personnel, and others in these groups. Postings will be adjusted after the completion of the probation period.
The circular emphasizes that the policy is designed to support women in balancing professional responsibilities with family commitments. Departments must compile information in a prescribed proforma, including employee name, designation, group category, current posting location, parental or marital address, approximate distance from posting, and probation status.
Reactions and Exceptions
While the policy is widely welcomed, some have raised concerns. Vikram Dev, President of the Democratic Teachers Front (DTF), urged the removal of the probation period clause. He stated, “In case of mutual transfers, the probation period clause should also be removed.” Notably, teachers on probation are excluded from the relief.
The move is part of broader efforts by the Punjab government to enhance employee welfare and retain talent by reducing commuting stress for women. It reflects a growing recognition of the need for family-friendly workplace policies.
