Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President of India CP Radhakrishnan has reconstituted the Upper House Committee on Petitions, appointing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha as its new chairperson. The decision comes weeks after Chadha joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marking a significant political shift. The reconstituted panel came into effect from May 20, according to an official notification.
Committee Composition
Besides Chadha, the committee includes several prominent members: Harsh Mahajan, Gulam Ali, Shambhu Sharan Patel, Mayankkumar Nayak, Masthan Rao Yadav Beedha, Jebi Mather Hisham, Subhasish Khuntia, Rwngwra Narzary, and Sandosh Kumar P. This diverse group of parliamentarians will oversee the examination of petitions submitted by citizens on issues related to governance, public policy, and matters of public interest.
Role and Responsibilities
The Petitions Committee plays a crucial role in the Rajya Sabha by reviewing grievances and suggestions from the public. It ensures that citizen concerns are addressed through parliamentary mechanisms, thereby strengthening democratic accountability. The committee's work involves scrutinizing petitions, seeking responses from relevant ministries, and recommending actions to the government.
Chadha's appointment is seen as a strategic move, given his background as a lawyer and his active participation in parliamentary debates. His leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the committee's functioning, focusing on transparency and efficiency.
The reconstitution of the committee reflects the ongoing changes in the Rajya Sabha's composition and priorities. With Chadha at the helm, the panel is likely to prioritize high-impact petitions that address pressing national issues.
