Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Kargil War Memorial in Drass on Friday, where he paid heartfelt tributes to the soldiers who lost their lives during the 1999 Kargil conflict. In a stirring address, Singh emphasized the indomitable spirit of the Indian armed forces and urged the youth to draw inspiration from their courage.

Standing before the eternal flame, Singh laid a wreath and observed a moment of silence in honor of the martyrs. He later addressed a gathering of soldiers, veterans, and local residents, recounting the valiant efforts of the Indian Army during Operation Vijay. “The bravery displayed by our soldiers in Kargil is unparalleled. Their sacrifice reminds us that the nation’s security is paramount,” he said.
Message to the Nation
Singh called upon every citizen to remember the supreme sacrifice of the armed forces. He highlighted that the Kargil War Memorial stands as a symbol of national pride and resilience. According to the Defence Minister, over 500 soldiers laid down their lives during the conflict, and their stories must be passed down to future generations.
Development Initiatives
During his visit, Singh also announced a series of welfare measures for ex-servicemen and their families, including enhanced pension benefits and better healthcare facilities. He reiterated the government’s commitment to modernizing the armed forces and ensuring their well-being. “Our soldiers are our greatest asset, and we will leave no stone unturned in supporting them,” he added.
The Defence Minister’s visit to Drass comes ahead of Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed annually on July 26. The memorial, located at the foothills of the Himalayas, attracts thousands of visitors each year, serving as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war.
