Rajnath Singh Reviews Kaveri Engine, Urges 6th-Gen Tech at DRDO

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Inspects DRDO's Gas Turbine Research in Bengaluru

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conducted a significant visit to the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Bengaluru on Monday. During this high-profile inspection, he thoroughly reviewed the progress of India's indigenous military gas turbine engine programs, with particular focus on the long-running and much-delayed Kaveri engine project.

Strategic Push for Next-Generation Propulsion Systems

Minister Singh issued a clear directive to GTRE scientists and officials, urging them to concentrate on developing next-generation propulsion systems while simultaneously building a comprehensive nationwide ecosystem to support advanced engine development. He specifically referenced India's ambitious plans for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), emphasizing that the country must move decisively beyond fifth-generation capabilities.

"We cannot limit ourselves to only 5th generation engines. We must begin the development of 6th generation, advanced technologies as soon as possible," Singh declared during his address. He highlighted the increasingly critical role of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and innovative new materials in modern propulsion technologies.

Complex Engineering and Compressed Timelines

Singh described aero engine development as an exceptionally complex integration of multiple scientific disciplines including thermodynamics, materials science, fluid mechanics, and advanced mechanical engineering. He noted that even technologically advanced nations typically require 25 to 30 years to develop next-generation engines.

However, given India's strategic requirements, the Defence Minister urged Indian scientists to dramatically compress these development timelines. "We must assume that 20 years have already passed and we now have only 5–7 years left," he stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Demonstration of Indigenous Capabilities

During his visit, Singh referenced Operation Sindoor as evidence of the armed forces' growing self-reliance through the deployment of indigenous communication systems, surveillance equipment, and weapon platforms. He also expressed strong support for joint studies with the United Kingdom and France under the National Aero Engine Mission framework, noting that such international partnerships would help India better understand technological challenges while simultaneously building domestic capability.

Technical Briefings and Engine Testing

The Defence Minister received comprehensive briefings on multiple aspects of India's engine development efforts, including:

  • Ongoing engine development programs and their current status
  • Collaboration initiatives with Indian industry, academic institutions, and research organizations
  • Technical support being extended to the armed forces

Singh personally toured an exhibition showcasing indigenously developed engines and critical components. Most significantly, he witnessed a full afterburner engine test of the Kaveri engine—a crucial milestone in India's determined push toward aero engine self-reliance.

Emphasis on Strategic Autonomy

During his interactions with scientists and officials, Singh described DRDO as the fundamental foundation of India's strategic capability. He stressed the absolute necessity of achieving Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in aero engine technology, particularly amid the current shifting geopolitical landscape.

"Supply chains are breaking and new ecosystems are developing. Nations possessing indigenous critical technologies will remain safe, secure and sustain themselves," he asserted, reiterating the government's unwavering commitment to technological self-sufficiency.

High-Level Attendance

The visit was attended by several senior officials including Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and DRDO Chairman Samir V. Kamat, along with numerous senior GTRE scientists and administrative officials. Their presence underscored the strategic importance of the minister's review and directives.

Upcoming International Engagement

On Tuesday, Defence Minister Singh is scheduled to join French Minister of Defence Catherine Vautrin to inaugurate the Tata Advanced Systems' final assembly line for the Airbus H125 helicopter in Kolar. Minister Vautrin, who is arriving in Bengaluru early Tuesday for the "India France Annual Bilateral Dialogue," is expected to receive a formal guard of honour alongside Singh at the HAL airport, further highlighting the strengthening defence cooperation between the two nations.
