RSS Maintains Silence Amid Ram Mandir Donation Controversy
Mounting evidence of irregularities in donations to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has shocked the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), which is keen for swift justice. Anxieties are running deep as the Sangh seeks to ward off growing negative perceptions. The hardest part for the RSS is that the financial misappropriation unfolded under the watch of Champat Rai, a veteran of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the religious arm of the RSS.
VHP Takes Center Stage in Damage Control
As soon as the matter snowballed into a political controversy, VHP international president Alok Kumar went public to field the damage. It is learnt that the RSS instructed the VHP to respond to allegations without delay. Reason: Champat Rai is the serving international vice president of VHP, and the RSS was clear that the Parishad must clear the mess created under its high functionaries. Accordingly, Alok Kumar made the first comments on Thursday after the Uttar Pradesh government's Special Investigation Team (SIT) submitted its report recommending an FIR against certain individuals. Alok Kumar asserted that the FIR should be registered at the earliest, no guilty spared, and the case fast-tracked. Even after Champat Rai's resignation from the Trust was confirmed on Saturday, Alok Kumar stated that the Trust would decide on the resignation in its July 7 meeting.
RSS's Calculated Silence and Internal Dynamics
What's crucial is VHP's public firefighting and RSS's calibrated silence. No senior Sangh functionary has spoken on the alleged theft of donations. Opposition Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is raising the issue ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh elections. Sangh insiders point to the matter being entirely the Trust's doing, though they vouch for Champat Rai's personal integrity. Loads of money were found on the person of Champat Rai's ex-driver. RSS's silence may stem from other reasons: the timing could not be worse as this is the centenary year of RSS, established in 1925, and the Sangh is marking it with the largest Hindu outreach in its history. Additionally, it is ironic to face a perception battle from Ram Mandir, which gave the RSS its largest social acceptance among Hindus. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat spoke at the consecration ceremony, calling it the culmination of 30 years of dedication by RSS volunteers.
RSS's Historical Context and VHP's Role
The RSS, which battled bans in the past, came closest to the masses after its involvement in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Insiders suggest that the Sangh is a nursery for several leaders who eventually go their separate ways. RSS affiliate VHP is now handling the case, demanding immediate justice. The Trust's first official statement on Saturday said, "We are shocked, deeply saddened, and profoundly affected by the incidents that have come to light."
Political Ramifications in Uttar Pradesh
While VHP fights on the ideological level, the bigger battle will be fought politically in Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh Yadav upped the ante against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying if voted to power, SP will build Ayodhya into Siyaram Dham and restore people's faith. Yogi acted quickly by forming the SIT; eight arrests have been made, and resignations of Champat Rai and Anil Mishra secured. The controversy may have handed Yogi leverage within BJP's internal power politics. The ruling party and VHP will now rely on Yogi to manage negative perceptions by fast-tracking legal remedies in this matter that impinges directly on faith.
