Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the government's recent austerity appeal. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Pawar emphasized the need for broader consultations given the current international situation.
Pawar's statement
"Given the current international situation, the central government must prioritize greater sensitivity and broad consultations," Pawar said. He stressed that an all-party meeting would allow for a collective approach to the austerity measures being proposed.
Context of the appeal
The government's austerity appeal comes amid global economic uncertainties and rising inflation. Pawar's call for a meeting reflects concerns that unilateral decisions may not adequately address the challenges faced by various sections of society.
Pawar also highlighted the importance of bipartisan cooperation in navigating the current economic landscape. "In times like these, the government should not act in isolation. All parties must be taken into confidence," he added.
Reactions from other parties
Opposition parties have echoed Pawar's sentiments, with several leaders demanding a parliamentary debate on the austerity measures. The Congress party has also called for a detailed discussion on the impact of these measures on the common man.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders have defended the government's approach, stating that the austerity appeal is necessary to ensure fiscal discipline and long-term economic stability.
As the debate continues, all eyes are on the Prime Minister's Office for a response to Pawar's request.
