Raut rejects 'rebel' label for defectors
Sanjay Raut, a senior leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), on Friday asserted that the party remains strong despite the split led by Eknath Shinde in 2022. He also backed Aaditya Thackeray as capable of leading the party.
Raut took exception to the term 'rebels' for leaders who left the Uddhav Thackeray-led party, arguing that such a term should be reserved for freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev. He said those who left were not rebels but simply changed sides.
Party strength post-split
Raut claimed that the Shiv Sena (UBT) has retained its core support base and organizational strength despite the defection of a significant number of MLAs and MPs. He cited the party's performance in recent local body elections as evidence of its enduring appeal among voters.
The party has been working to consolidate its position ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections, with a focus on grassroots outreach and alliance-building with like-minded parties.
Aaditya Thackeray's leadership potential
When asked about the party's future leadership, Raut expressed confidence in Aaditya Thackeray, the son of Uddhav Thackeray. He said Aaditya has the capability to lead the party and has proven his mettle as a young leader with a vision for Maharashtra.
Aaditya Thackeray, who served as a minister in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government, has been actively campaigning and addressing rallies across the state. Raut noted that Aaditya's appeal among youth and his understanding of urban issues make him a strong candidate for leadership.
Political context
The Shiv Sena split in June 2022 when Eknath Shinde led a rebellion, taking a majority of MLAs with him to form a government with the BJP. The Supreme Court is currently hearing petitions related to the split, including the disqualification of rebel MLAs.
Despite the setback, Raut said the party has emerged stronger and more united. He criticized the Shinde faction for aligning with the BJP, which he described as ideologically opposed to the Shiv Sena's core principles.
