India's Telecom Subscriber Base Crosses 134.3 Crore in May: TRAI
India's Telecom Subscribers Hit 134.3 Crore in May

India's telecom subscriber base crossed the 134.3 crore mark in May 2026, according to a recent report by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). This represents a month-on-month growth of approximately 0.5%, with Bharti Airtel leading in new user additions during the period.

TRAI Report Highlights Subscriber Growth

The TRAI report, released on June 26, 2026, reveals that the total number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 133.6 crore in April 2026 to 134.3 crore in May 2026. The wireless segment accounted for the bulk of this growth, with wireline subscriptions also showing a modest uptick. The overall teledensity in the country rose to 96.5% from 96.1% in the previous month.

Airtel Leads in New User Additions

Bharti Airtel added the highest number of new subscribers in May 2026, with a net addition of 2.1 million users. Reliance Jio followed with 1.8 million new subscribers, while Vodafone Idea added 0.5 million. The state-owned BSNL also reported a net gain of 0.2 million subscribers during the same period.

Wireless and Wireline Segments

The wireless subscriber base grew from 130.5 crore in April to 131.2 crore in May, a rise of 0.7 million. Wireline subscriptions increased from 3.1 crore to 3.15 crore, reflecting a steady demand for broadband services. The number of broadband subscribers also saw a rise, reaching 92.5 crore in May 2026, up from 91.8 crore in April.

Urban vs. Rural Divide

The report highlights that urban areas continue to have higher teledensity at 175.2%, compared to rural areas at 62.4%. However, rural subscriber additions outpaced urban ones in May, with 0.9 million new rural subscribers versus 0.6 million in urban areas. This indicates a gradual narrowing of the digital divide.

Impact on Telecom Sector

The sustained growth in subscriber numbers underscores the increasing reliance on mobile connectivity in India. Analysts attribute the growth to affordable data plans, expanding 4G and 5G coverage, and government initiatives to boost digital inclusion. Airtel's strong performance in new user additions is linked to its aggressive marketing and network expansion in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
