Trinamool Congress MP Mitali Bag has alleged that her vehicle was attacked by suspected BJP supporters during the final day of campaigning for the West Bengal Assembly elections. The incident occurred in the Arambag constituency, where Bag is the sitting MP. According to TMC leaders, a group of individuals, whom they described as "BJP goons," vandalised her car, smashing the windshield and causing injuries to Bag from broken glass.
TMC's Allegations
The Trinamool Congress promptly accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of orchestrating the attack. Party spokespersons linked the incident to remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which they claimed had incited violence against TMC workers. Bag was taken to a local hospital for treatment, and her condition is reported to be stable. The TMC has demanded strict action against the perpetrators.
BJP's Denial
The BJP has strongly denied any involvement in the attack. Party leaders in West Bengal stated that the allegations were baseless and an attempt by the TMC to divert attention from other issues. They called for an impartial investigation into the incident. Local police officials confirmed that the area remains peaceful, with additional security forces deployed to prevent any further escalation.
Political Context
The Arambag constituency has seen intense political competition in recent years. It has changed hands between the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the TMC, and the BJP in successive elections. The final day of campaigning saw heightened rhetoric and tensions, with all major parties holding rallies and door-to-door campaigns.
Response from Authorities
District administration officials stated that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. They assured that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain law and order. The Election Commission has been alerted, and security has been tightened in sensitive areas.
This incident adds to a series of clashes reported during the election campaign, raising concerns about political violence in the state. Both the TMC and BJP have accused each other of instigating violence, and the Election Commission has urged all parties to maintain peace.
