On a rain-soaked Saturday night, when traffic snarls, slippery roads and frayed tempers usually define the city's busiest intersections, a quiet act of compassion at Raipur's Jai Stambh Chowk stood out—offering a rare glimpse of empathy in uniform. Around 9 pm, as heavy showers turned the junction slushy and chaotic, a traffic constable halted the rush of vehicles to help a disabled man crawl his way across the road, transforming an ordinary duty post into a moment of humanity.
A challenging crossing
Crossing the intersection had become a challenge even for able-bodied pedestrians. Heavy rain had left the busy square muddy and congested, with traffic piling up and visibility dipping under streaks of headlights. In the middle of this churn, a disabled man was seen dragging himself across the road, using both his hands and legs, struggling to inch forward through the relentless flow of vehicles. He tried repeatedly, but the odds were stacked against him. Each attempt seemed fraught with danger—vehicles swerved past, and for a moment, it appeared as though he could be knocked down or run over. The scene drew anxious glances, but few could step into the fast-moving traffic to help.
Constable's timely intervention
That is when traffic constable Girivar Tandon, posted at the junction, noticed the man. In that instant, he moved beyond the call of duty. Walking up to the stranded pedestrian, Tandon gently lifted and supported him, then paced alongside, guiding him safely across the intersection, halting vehicles and clearing a path where needed. The moment was brief, but it carried weight. Those present watched as a policeman, often seen as an enforcer of rules, chose instead to embody empathy.
An act of kindness continues
As the man reached the other side, an empty auto-rickshaw heading towards Amapara came into view. Tandon signalled the driver, requesting him to drop the man to his destination. Without hesitation, the driver agreed, helping the passenger into the vehicle before driving away. Tandon's act did not make headlines in the conventional sense, but for those who witnessed it, it reaffirmed something far more enduring—that even in the rush of a city, kindness can still find its way.
