Around 50 women from a village once plagued by Naxal violence visited Varanasi for the first time, marking a significant step in community integration and empowerment. The trip was organized by the Varanasi Range Police under its community policing initiative and the Uttar Pradesh government's Mission Shakti programme, which aims to enhance women's safety and participation.
First-Time Visitors Enthralled by Spiritual Capital
The women, hailing from a remote village that had previously been a Naxal stronghold, expressed awe and delight as they explored the ancient city's renowned landmarks. Their itinerary included visits to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu shrines, as well as other cultural and historical sites. For many, it was their first exposure to a major urban center, let alone a city of Varanasi's spiritual significance.
According to police officials, the initiative was designed to foster trust and bridge the gap between law enforcement and communities affected by insurgency. "This visit is part of our ongoing efforts to bring these women into the mainstream and show them the rich heritage of our state," said a senior officer involved in the programme.
Community Policing and Mission Shakti in Action
The Varanasi Range Police has been actively promoting community policing to build positive relationships with marginalized groups. Under Mission Shakti, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched several schemes focused on women's safety, education, and economic empowerment. This trip aligns with those goals by providing exposure and educational opportunities.
One of the participants shared her experience: "We never imagined we would get to see such beautiful places. The police treated us with respect and care. It feels like a new beginning for us." The women were accompanied by police personnel throughout the visit, ensuring their comfort and safety.
