VCK Leader Thol Thirumavalavan Dismisses AIADMK's Election Promise as Ineffective
In a sharp critique of opposition strategies, VCK leader and MP Thol Thirumavalavan has asserted that AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palanisami's poll promise to provide Rs10,000 as compassion aid to every family will have no significant impact on the upcoming assembly election. Speaking to reporters at Trichy airport, Thirumavalavan suggested that such announcements might stem from a lack of confidence in electoral victory.
Questioning the Motive Behind Freebie Promises
"This announcement by EPS may have originated from the confidence that they are not going to win the election anyway," Thirumavalavan stated. "These announcements will not make any impact on the minds of the people and in the election." He emphasized that voters are increasingly discerning and unlikely to be swayed by last-minute financial pledges without substantive policy backing.
Defining Acceptable Welfare Measures
When probed about the broader implications of freebies on state finances, the MP clarified VCK's longstanding position. The party advocates that only essential services like education and healthcare should be provided free of cost, arguing that this approach ensures sustainable development without overburdening the exchequer.
However, Thirumavalavan made a distinction for the DMK government's welfare initiatives. "The DMK govt's welfare measures aimed at women and students were intended to uplift those in the lowest strata of society and those who had been historically deprived," he explained. He added that these financial burdens are manageable, as DMK had implemented such decisions after a thorough assessment of the state's financial capacity, ensuring they align with long-term economic stability.
Critiquing Actor Vijay's Political Ambiguity
Shifting focus to other political figures, Thirumavalavan commented on actor-turned-politician Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party. He noted that Vijay appears to be continuing his opposition to DMK without clearly articulating his party's policies or vision. "Even those of us in politics are unable to understand his mission," the MP remarked, highlighting a perceived lack of clarity in Vijay's political agenda that could hinder voter engagement.
Openness to Political Alliances
In a concluding remark on potential political realignments, Thirumavalavan expressed openness to former AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam (OPS) joining the DMK camp. "The MP said he will welcome it if OPS joins the DMK camp," indicating a strategic perspective on coalition-building ahead of the elections. This stance underscores the dynamic nature of Tamil Nadu's political landscape, where alliances can significantly influence electoral outcomes.
Overall, Thirumavalavan's statements reflect a critical view of populist promises, a nuanced defense of targeted welfare, and ongoing scrutiny of emerging political forces in the state.
