VHP defends Champat Rai in Ram temple donation theft case, backs SIT probe
VHP defends Champat Rai, backs SIT probe in Ram temple case

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday came out in strong defence of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust general secretary Champat Rai, who is facing allegations of theft of donations meant for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The VHP stated that the Trust itself had requested a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the matter, dismissing the accusations as politically motivated.

VHP dismisses allegations as baseless

In a statement, the VHP said that Champat Rai has been a dedicated worker for the Ram temple movement and that the allegations against him are part of a conspiracy to defame the temple construction effort. The organisation expressed full confidence in Rai's integrity and claimed that the Trust's decision to seek an SIT investigation demonstrates transparency.

Opposition leaders accused of hypocrisy

The VHP also targeted opposition leaders, including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal, accusing them of not resigning from public office despite facing corruption allegations. The statement questioned why such leaders are demanding action against Rai while refusing to step down themselves.

Background of the case

The allegations against Champat Rai surfaced earlier this week when a complaint was filed claiming that donations collected for the Ram temple construction were misappropriated. The Trust, however, has maintained that all funds are properly accounted for and that the complaint is an attempt to disrupt the temple project. The Uttar Pradesh government has yet to announce the formation of an SIT, but the Trust's request has been forwarded to the state authorities.

Political reactions

The opposition has seized upon the allegations to criticise the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its affiliates. Congress spokesperson said that the matter should be investigated thoroughly to ensure no misuse of public faith. Meanwhile, the VHP has called for a fair probe and warned against any attempts to derail the temple construction, which is scheduled for completion by 2024.
