Villagers Mount Swift Torchlight Rescue After Air Ambulance Crashes in Chatra Forest
A deafening roar shattered the evening calm in Kasari-Karmatand village, located in Simaria block of Chatra district, on Monday. Masons and laborers working at a nearby construction site immediately sprang into action after witnessing an aircraft flying unusually low and out of balance. The sound of the crash echoed across a radius of approximately 7 kilometers, prompting a rapid, community-led search operation.
Immediate Response in Adverse Conditions
Despite heavy rain and thunderstorms, nearly 300 villagers from 15 surrounding hamlets rushed toward the crash site. Guided solely by the sound of the impact and the glow from their mobile phone flashlights, they navigated the dense, dark forest. Their collective efforts illuminated the area, transforming it into a flickering corridor of light as they scoured debris scattered over nearly 1 kilometer.
The search lasted between two to two and a half hours, with villagers reporting that they saw the aircraft descending erratically before it fell. Local youth Sunil Bhuiyan described the terrifying moment, noting that the aircraft produced a sound akin to a racing car as it went down. He claimed the noise was audible up to 15 kilometers away, breaking the jungle's silence and drawing residents from their homes in alarm.
Challenges and Heroic Efforts
Manoj Yadav, among the first to reach the wreckage, recounted the harrowing scene. "The sight of the aircraft engine left me stunned," he said. "When I saw the engine, I realized this was a major accident. We knew we had to act fast and try to bring everyone out."
The rescue was fraught with difficulties. Villagers had to trek more than 3 kilometers through slippery, treacherous terrain to access the remote crash site. Yadav emphasized that fear was set aside in the face of urgency, with humanity driving their efforts forward. "Every step had to be taken carefully. In some places the ground was slippery. But fear had no meaning at that moment. Humanity pushed us forward," he affirmed.
